About the role

The Transportation Generalist/Transportation Associate plays a critical role in maintaining and repairing Minnesota's roads, focusing on both summer and winter operations. The position offers opportunities for career advancement, with the Transportation Associate role serving as a training ground for promotion to the Transportation Generalist.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and reconstruct roadways, right-of-ways, and road surfaces using various materials such as gravel, bituminous, and concrete.

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment, including tractors, mowers, and small rollers, to ensure safe and efficient road maintenance.

  • Set up and manage traffic control systems to ensure the safety of employees and the traveling public during high-traffic areas.

  • Perform landscaping tasks, including planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming, and removing tree limbs and stumps.

  • Remove snow and ice from roadways and shoulders, prepare and inspect winter equipment, and perform snow route inspections and post-storm cleanup.

Requirements

  • A valid MN Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement, and the ability to upgrade to a CDL Class A with tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire.

  • Experience in snow and ice control, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities.

  • Knowledge of English sufficient for communication with employees and the public, and maintaining routine written logs and simple records.

Qualifications

  • For Transportation Generalist: One year of experience in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities; or a combination of education and experience that provides the equivalent of one year of experience.

  • For Transportation Associate: A Commercial Driver's Permit with no air brake restrictions, and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.

Skills

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and machinery.

  • Knowledge of traffic control procedures and winter maintenance techniques.

Pay

  • Hourly range: $25.19 - $31.60

  • Annual range: $52,597 - $65,981

Schedule

  • Full-time, year-round position with seasonal schedules (summer hours & winter hours).

  • Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations.
