About the role

The Transportation Generalist/Transportation Associate plays a critical role in maintaining Minnesota's roads and ensuring safe travel for its residents and visitors. This position is part of the Transportation Specialist Series, with the Transportation Associate serving as a trainee who will progress to the Transportation Generalist after one year of training.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and reconstruct roadways, right-of-ways, and road shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete surfaces.

  • Operate and maintain all types of tractor mowers and small rollers for road maintenance.

  • Set up and manage traffic control systems to ensure safety during high traffic volumes.

  • Perform landscaping duties such as planting, watering, seeding, and removing debris.

  • Remove snow and ice from roadways and shoulders, prepare and inspect winter equipment, and perform snow route inspections.

  • Manage documentation on snow and ice data for inventory and resource management.

Requirements

  • Experience: One year of experience in snow and ice control, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, or related activities.

  • Education: Completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits).

  • Licenses: Valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with tanker endorsement, and ability to upgrade to a CDL Class A with tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications

  • License: Commercial Driver's Permit with no air brake restrictions, and must obtain a Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient for communication and record-keeping.

Skills

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Proficiency in operating heavy equipment and machinery.

  • Knowledge of traffic control layouts and winter maintenance procedures.

Pay

  • Hourly range: $25.19 - $31.60

  • Annual range: $52,597 - $65,981

Schedule

  • Full-time, year-round position with seasonal schedules (summer hours & winter hours).

  • Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations.
