About the role

The Transportation Generalist/Transportation Associate plays a critical role in maintaining Minnesota's roads and ensuring safe travel for its residents and visitors. This position is part of the Transportation Specialist Series, with the Transportation Associate serving as a trainee who will be promoted to the Transportation Generalist after one year of training.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and reconstruct roadways, right-of-ways, and road surfaces using various materials and equipment.

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as tractors, mowers, and small rollers.

  • Set up and manage traffic control systems during high traffic volumes.

  • Perform landscaping tasks including planting, watering, seeding, and removing debris.

  • Remove snow and ice from roadways and shoulders during winter seasons.

  • Inspect and maintain snow and ice control equipment and prepare for winter storms.

  • Document snow and ice data for inventory and resource management.

Requirements

  • Experience: One year of experience in snow and ice, soil, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities.

  • Education: Completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits).

  • Licenses: Valid MN Commercial Driver's License Class "B" with tanker endorsement and CDL Class A with tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications

  • License: Commercial Driver's Permit with no air brake restrictions, tanker endorsement, and CDL Class A with tanker endorsement within 3 months of hire.

  • Exam: Computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test (required for contingent job offers).

Skills

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Knowledge of English sufficient for job requirements.

  • Basic computer skills for job-related tasks.

Pay

$23.57 - $24.98 / hourly; $49,214 - $50,697 / annually for Transportation Associate.

$25.19 - $31.60 / hourly; $52,597 - $65,981 / annually for Transportation Generalist.

Schedule

This is a full-time, year-round position with seasonal schedules (summer hours & winter hours). Summer hours are currently Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (4-10’s). Winter hours are anticipated to be Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hours may include days, nights, weekends and holidays as required by weather and maintenance conditions.
