About the role

The Transportation Generalist/Transportation Associate plays a critical role in maintaining and repairing Minnesota's roads, focusing on both summer and winter operations. In the summer, responsibilities include road surface and roadside maintenance, while in the winter, tasks involve snow and ice removal.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and reconstruct roadways, right-of-ways, and road surfaces.
  • Operate and maintain all tractor mowers and small rollers for road maintenance.
  • Perform traffic control set-ups and ensure compliance with temporary traffic zone layouts.
  • Perform landscaping duties such as tree trimming, grass cutting, and debris removal.
  • Remove snow from roadways and shoulders, widen roadways, and remove snow from rights of way or yards.
  • Apply anti-icing and de-icing chemicals and remove frozen ice and material from culverts.
  • Perform night or dawn patrols and prepare and inspect winter equipment.
  • Inspect and maintain snow routes and perform post-storm cleanup.

Requirements

  • Experience: One year of experience in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities.
  • Education: Completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits).
  • Licenses: Valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with tanker endorsement and ability to upgrade to a CDL Class A with tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications

  • Licenses: Commercial Driver's Permit with no air brake restrictions and tanker endorsement.
  • Knowledge: Working knowledge of English sufficient for communication and record-keeping.

Skills

  • Communication skills: Ability to interact with employees and the public.
  • Physical abilities: Ability to lift up to 70 pounds, rotate through various body positions, and operate machinery.
