Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis and contact with private entities.
Responsibilities
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
- Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
- Assists with surveying-related work.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Inspects work performed by maintenance crews.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
- Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
- Operates light and heavy equipment.
- Oversees workers and coordinates applicable activities.
- Performs maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Supervises, trains, and coordinates a roadway maintenance crew performing routine and emergency roadway maintenance.
- Plans, prioritizes, and oversees maintenance activities such as pavement repairs, drainage maintenance, shoulder work, traffic control, and storm response.
- Manages the section’s vegetation control program through the safe, effective, and compliant use of herbicides.
- Helps maintain safe travel conditions and clear visibility for the traveling public.
- Coordinates daily work assignments, equipment use, and material needs while promoting safety and accountability.
- Inspects completed work to ensure it meets TxDOT standards, policies, and performance expectations.
- Responds to emergencies and supports incident response, weather events, and other maintenance operations as needed.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Graduate or equivalent in general education.
- 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance-related work (experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" endorsement at time of application.
Skills
- Extensive knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
- Extensive knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Extensive knowledge of methods and procedures involving storage and transport of hazardous materials.
- Considerable knowledge of inventory/stock control procedures.
- Considerable knowledge of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
- Expert skill in operating light and heavy highway equipment.
- Proficient skill in performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, and technical survey data.
- Proficient skill in leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
- Proficient skill in coordinating labor, materials, and equipment.
- Proficient skill in prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
- Proficient skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
- Proficient skill in maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
- Subject to noise.
- Required to wear protective gear: respirator, hard hat, or other device.
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
- Hearing: perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
- Close Visual Acuity: work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading; visual inspection of small defects/parts.
Conditions of Employment
- Must pass a pre-employment physical as this job has been identified as physically demanding.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
- This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
- Must maintain regular and dependable attendance and adhere to established work schedules.
- Must be available to work weekends and holidays, as required.
- Must be willing and able to work beyond regularly scheduled hours when operational needs require.
- Must participate in a rotating on-call schedule, when applicable to the position.
- Must wear employer-provided personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all applicable safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
