Transport Maint Crew Chief

Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis and contact with private entities.

Responsibilities

• Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities.
• Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
• Assists in administration of the maintenance section, including estimating and gathering materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
• Inspects roads while en route to and from job sites and reports problems to supervisors.
• Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
• Operates light and heavy equipment.
• Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
• Performs maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
• Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments, serving as a resource for complex questions, troubleshooting problems, presenting operational updates to the supervisor, providing input on team members’ career conversations, and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
• Supervises, trains, and coordinates a road maintenance crew performing routine and emergency roadway maintenance.
• Plans, prioritizes, and oversees maintenance activities, including pavement repairs, drainage maintenance, shoulder work, traffic control, and storm response.
• Manages the section's vegetation control program through the safe, effective, and compliant application of herbicides.
• Ensures roadways are maintained to provide safe travel conditions and clear visibility for the traveling public.
• Coordinates daily work assignments, equipment utilization, and material needs while promoting a strong culture of safety and accountability.
• Inspects completed work to ensure compliance with TxDOT standards, policies, and performance expectations.
• Responds to emergencies and supports incident response, weather events, and other maintenance operations as needed.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent in general education.
• 5 years' experience in roadway maintenance-related work (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Valid driver’s license. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain one within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
• Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment and be subject to random drug testing (this is a Safety Impact position).
• Must pass a pre-employment physical as this job has been identified as physically demanding.
