Transport Maint Crew Chief

Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis and contact with private entities.

Responsibilities

• Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
• Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
• Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
• Inspects roads while en route to and from job sites and reports problems to supervisors.
• Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
• Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
• Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
• Operates light and heavy equipment.
• Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
• Serves as a lead worker by:
  • Scheduling daily work assignments.
  • Serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems.
  • Presenting operational updates to the supervisor.
  • Providing input on team members' career conversations.
  • Approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent in general education.
• 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance-related work (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Must possess or obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 calendar days from the date of employment.
• Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment and be subject to random drug testing (this is a Safety Impact position).
• Must pass a pre-employment physical as this job has been identified as physically demanding.

Skills

• Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
• Familiarity with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Understanding of inventory and stock control procedures.
• Proficiency in operating light and heavy highway equipment.
• Ability to lead, assign, review, and monitor the work of others.
• Strong skills in prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
• Ability to maintain a safe and effective working relationship with others.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to environmental conditions with protection from weather but not temperature changes.
• Exposure to outside environmental conditions without effective weather protection.
• Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
• Exposure to extreme cold (below 32°F) and heat (above 100°F) for more than one hour.
• Subject to hazards such as moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals.
• Exposure to atmospheric conditions including fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
• Required to wear protective gear such as respirators, hard hats, or other devices.
• Works frequently in small/crawl spaces, manholes, or areas that may cause claustrophobia.
• Works in narrow aisles or passageways.
• Physical demands include:
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs occasionally and carry files/small tools.
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Prolonged periods of sitting.
• Climbing: Ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
• Balancing: Walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
• Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
• Kneeling: Bending legs at the knee to rest on knee(s).
• Crouching: Bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
• Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Prolonged periods of standing and walking to accomplish tasks or move between work sites.
• Pushing and pulling using upper extremities to move objects.
• Lifting: Raising objects from lower to higher positions or horizontally.
• Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or working primarily with fingers.
• Grasping: Applying pressure to objects with fingers and palms.
• Hearing: Perceiving sound at normal speaking levels and receiving information orally.
• Repetitive motion: Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
• Close visual acuity for:
  • Working with data/figures, viewing computer screens, and extensive reading.
  • Visual inspection of small defects/parts.
  • Using measurement devices and/or assembling/fabricating parts.
  • Operating machines such as drill presses, power saws, and mills.
  • Operating motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
  • Determining work quality and making general observations of facilities/structures.
