Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief
About the role
Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis and contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
This position is based in TxDOT's Houston District, West Harris Maintenance Office. In this leadership role, you'll guide a skilled maintenance crew and help keep Texas roads safe and reliable. Experience gained in this position can provide opportunities for advancement within the department.
Responsibilities
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
- Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
- Operates light and heavy equipment.
- Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
- Performs maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent in general education.
- 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance-related work (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must possess a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain one within 180 calendar days from the date of employment.
- Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
- Must be available to work nights and weekends as needed.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
Preferred Qualifications
- Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement.
Skills
- Extensive knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
- Familiarity with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Knowledge of methods and procedures involving storage and transport of hazardous materials.
- Considerable knowledge of incident management procedures.
- Understanding of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
- Proficient skill in leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
- Ability to coordinate labor, materials, and equipment.
- Strong prioritization and organization of work assignments.
- Experience training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
- Ability to maintain a safe and effective working relationship with others.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Subject to environmental conditions with protection from weather but not temperature changes.

- Subject to extreme cold and heat (below 32°F and/or above 100°F for more than one hour).
- Subject to noise and vibration.

- Required to wear protective gear, including respirator, hard hat, or other devices.
- Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools.
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Climbing: Ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, etc.
- Balancing: Walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
- Crouching: Bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
- Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
- Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Standing: Prolonged periods of time.
- Walking: Moving on foot to accomplish tasks, including long distances or from one work site to another.
- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against an object with force to move it in a direction.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force moving objects in a sustained motion.
- Lifting: Raising objects from lower to higher position or horizontally to a different position.
- Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
- Feeling: Determining size, shape, temperature, or texture of objects.
- Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
- Hearing: Perceiving sound at normal speaking levels; receiving information by oral communication.
- Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Visual Acuity: Operating machines such as drill presses, power saws, and mills; operating motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment; determining work quality and making general observations of facilities/structures.
