Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief

About the role

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis and contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

This position is based at the North Harris Maintenance Office and offers an entry-level leadership opportunity to coordinate personnel, equipment, and materials for roadway maintenance projects. You will work closely with the Maintenance Section Supervisor and help lead daily operations that impact the traveling public. Strong communication skills, basic computer proficiency, and a commitment to teamwork and customer service are essential, as you'll regularly interact with coworkers and the public through phone and email.

Responsibilities

• Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
• Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
• Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
• Operates light and heavy equipment.
• Performs maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
• Serves as a lead worker by:
  • Scheduling daily work assignments.
  • Serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting problems.
  • Presenting operational updates to the supervisor.
  • Providing input on team members’ career conversations.
  • Approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent in general education.
• 5 years' experience in roadway maintenance-related work (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Valid driver’s license. Must have or obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Skills

• Extensive knowledge of:
  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Considerable knowledge of:
  • Design, testing, and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures.
  • Incident management procedures.
• Expert skill in operating light and heavy highway equipment.
• Proficient skill in:
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Delegating both routine and important tasks and decisions while retaining ultimate accountability.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, and hazards including moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals.
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Kneeling: bending legs at knee to come to rest on knee(s).
• Reaching: extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Fingering: picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand.
• Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
• Hearing: perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
• Close Visual Acuity: work includes data/figures, viewing a computer screen, extensive reading, using measurement devices, and/or assembly or fabrication of parts.
• Visual Acuity: operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
