About the role

The Ralls Maintenance Section is seeking a Transportation Crew Chief to lead a skilled team responsible for maintaining the roadways that connect our communities. This position plays a key role in supporting transportation infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
  • Affords assistance in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from Job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Maintains materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems, presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
  • Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Inventory/stock control procedures.
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.
  • Delegates both routine and important tasks and decisions; shares authority but has ultimate accountability.

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.
  • Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
  • Subject to frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, and using fine motor skills.
  • Subject to frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and climbing.
