About the Role

Special Olympics Johnson County is seeking passionate, dedicated, and knowledgeable volunteers to serve as pickleball coaches, assistant coaches, and unified partners for local Special Olympics athletes. As a coach, you will help athletes learn and improve their pickleball skills by bringing game knowledge, enthusiasm, commitment, and a positive attitude to practices, events, and competitions. This role enriches the lives of athletes by building physical and social skills and instilling self-confidence.

This is a volunteer position, but coaches are the heart of our program, enabling athletes to compete, build confidence, make friends, and achieve incredible goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or assist with weekly 1-hour pickleball practices (approximately 8 weeks total)
  • Coach athletes at the Special Olympics North Carolina Fall Tournament (one weekend in November)
  • Work independently, with a co-coach, or bring an assistant—flexibility to fit your availability
  • Foster a positive and supportive environment for athletes to learn, grow, and have fun

Requirements

  • Knowledge of pickleball (no prior coaching experience required—training provided)
  • Must be at least 18 years old to become a certified coach
  • Ability to commit a few hours each month for practices and events
