About the role

This employee is responsible for providing case management services to school-age youth with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders and their families. The employee will be responsible for performing assessments of service needs, developing strategies for successful engagement, linking students to appropriate services, and problem-solving clinical and systems barriers to ensure the most productive life for identified youth.

Responsibilities

  • Screening and assessment
  • Coordinating and monitoring an array of services for identified children exhibiting difficulties at home, school, and/or in the community, or returning from hospitalization or other out-of-home placement
  • Communication and interaction with family members
  • Consultation and collaboration within schools and other child-serving agencies
  • Record keeping and report writing
  • Participation in Divisional, Departmental, School or County-wide committees/task forces

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a clinical discipline such as Counseling, Psychiatric Social Work, Psychology, Art Therapy, Psychiatric Nursing, or other directly related clinical discipline, all of which required a clinical practicum involving diagnostic and treatment services
  • Two years post-Master's experience providing clinical therapy and other mental health services, which included the application of diagnostic and treatment services
  • Trainee: Clinical Masters' as described above
  • Desirable experience providing family therapy and case management services to youth displaying high-risk behaviors/serious emotional disturbances
  • Experience providing mental health services or prevention services to youth in a school-based setting
  • Training/experience in assessing issues of suicide risk, trauma, sexual abuse, and/or cultural adjustment
  • Bilingual ability in English/Spanish
  • Virginia licensure or license eligibility as LCSW or LPC

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in speaking and understanding Spanish
  • Proficiency in reading and writing Spanish

Skills

Knowledge and skills in assessment, treatment, and/or prevention practices with children/adolescents at risk of, or currently experiencing, emotional disturbances. Strong clinical skills to engage families in a positive relationship, particularly those with limited experience with mental health services. Ability to work cooperatively with other systems and negotiate alliances in addressing multidimensional family needs. Ability to work as part of a team of school-based therapists, behavior intervention specialists, and a mental retardation case manager.
