School Resource Officer (SRO/ Deputy)

Butler County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a certified law-enforcement officer to serve as a School Resource Officer (SRO/Deputy) in our partner school districts.

About the role

The SRO is a sworn deputy who is assigned full-time to a school campus. The role blends law-enforcement duties with mentoring, education, and community-relations work to create a safe and positive school climate.

Responsibilities

• Enforce state and local laws on school property and respond to criminal incidents.
• Investigate complaints, make arrests, and prepare reports as required.
• Develop and deliver age-appropriate safety presentations (e.g., drug prevention, bullying, internet safety).
• Build positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community stakeholders.
• Participate in school-based threat-assessment teams and emergency-response planning.
• Monitor school grounds, parking lots, and surrounding areas to deter unauthorized activity.
• Coordinate with school administrators, counselors, and local agencies to support at-risk students.
• Serve as a visible, approachable resource for students seeking guidance or assistance.

Requirements

• Current Ohio Peace Officer certification (OPOTA) or ability to obtain certification within one year.
• Minimum two years of full-time law-enforcement experience (corrections experience may be considered).
• Successful completion of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office hiring process, including background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation, and medical examination.
• Valid Ohio driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and communicate effectively with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in school-based law enforcement, community policing, or youth-engagement programs.
• Certification in crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, or mental-health first aid.
• Familiarity with restorative-justice practices and trauma-informed policing.

Schedule

• Full-time, 40-hour work week aligned with the academic calendar (typically 185–190 days per year).
• Schedule follows the host school’s hours, with occasional evening or weekend events.
