About the role

The Clark County Juvenile Justice Department is seeking qualified candidates for the Juvenile Detention Assistant position. This role is responsible for providing safety, security, sight, and sound supervision for juveniles in an institutional setting, conducting perimeter checks, and intaking new juveniles while writing reports. The ideal candidate will be available to work nights and weekends and be proficient in defensive tactics.

This recruitment may fill positions located approximately 45 minutes from Las Vegas at 2400 Angel Peak Pl, Las Vegas, NV 89124. This recruitment is limited to the first 250 applications received and will close without notice once that number is reached. The examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies within the next six months or as extended by Human Resources.

Some positions may be term-limited, confidential, or non-union, with varying eligibility for benefits. Candidates must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Personally and electronically monitor juveniles in residential facilities; patrol buildings and grounds.
  • Conduct and record bed checks; report unusual situations to professional staff.
  • Perform lead Juvenile Detention Assistant responsibilities as experience is gained.
  • Receive and provide procedural directions to incoming juveniles; prepare space and supplies for juveniles.
  • Observe and report unusual or inappropriate behavior and emergency situations; ensure the safety and security of assigned juveniles; provide aid and call for medical assistance.
  • Release and prepare youth for transportation; escort youth to various locations.
  • Receive and direct authorized persons entering the property or facility.
  • Restrain juveniles, as needed, using approved physical and mechanical restraint methods.
  • Complete forms, keep records, maintain files, and write incident reports.
  • Under the supervision of a Juvenile Probation Officer, assist with supervising youth, providing input and feedback on behavior and treatment, interviewing youth and families, and sharing information about programs and community providers.
  • Assist with telephone coverage and making contact with youth and families; ensure field office security.
  • Drive a motor vehicle to transport juveniles to appointments and other locations or facilities; assist in maintaining County vehicles as directed.
  • Perform light housekeeping, laundry, and custodial duties.
  • Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit’s service by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.
  • May assist professional staff with direct supervision, intake procedures including strip searches.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of full-time experience working with and caring for juveniles, preferably at-risk juveniles, or college-level coursework in Criminal Justice, Child Development, Psychology, Social Work, Education, or related behavioral science.
  • Professional-level experience and/or education that provides the necessary skills may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver’s License.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, including periodic checks after employment. Must not have any qualifying offenses that violate NRS 62B.223 and/or NRS 62G.223.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States (Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers).
  • Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination and pre-employment drug test.

Working Conditions

  • Work evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
  • Work in violent, traumatic, or highly charged emotional environments.
  • Some positions may be assigned to a remote work site at high elevation.
  • May be subject to exposure to blood and airborne diseases.

Physical Demands

  • Mobility to work in a typical juvenile institutional residential setting and drive a motor vehicle to transport juveniles.
  • Stamina to stand and/or walk for extended periods and strength to restrain and/or eject individuals.
  • Vision to use standard office equipment and read printed materials, including a computer screen.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
  • Accommodation may be made for some physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.
