About the Role
We are looking for a motivated and people-oriented person to work closely with the Chartwells Management team to implement and assist with the HR policies at the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis. The key focus areas for this internship will be in Recruitment and Staffing, HR Administration, Associate Relations, Compliance, Wage and Hour, Training, and Safety. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical, allowing the intern to apply learned skills in a professional setting.
Responsibilities
- Assist in auditing the HR health of the operation by conducting the HR Assessment.
- Build upon local recruitment activity and assist in the posting and monitoring of requisitions.
- Become familiar with Payroll policies and procedures to file and review records for accuracy and to monitor reports and identify training areas to improve labor compliance.
- Maintain and update personnel files per the HR File Checklist to ensure records are accurate and consistent.
- Become involved in the Hourly Onboarding process and timely completion of I-9s for new hires.
- Orchestrate and track Passport training for current and new hourly associates.
- Participate in the Safety Committee on campus and assist with Accident Investigations and driving Safety Compliance.
- Assist Management team with monitoring timely completion of appraisals for associates, as needed.
- Participate in YouFirst and CHAT, on a regular basis, to drive hourly training and recognition.
- Ensure all Company, state, and federal postings are up-to-date within our units.
- Communicate with multiple departments to obtain necessary information to complete duties.
- Assist with employee inquiries by providing information or directing them to the appropriate resources.
- Support the coordination of new hire orientations, including preparing materials and ensuring accurate employee information.
- Help maintain and update employee records, ensuring accuracy in HR databases and timekeeping systems.
- File letters and documents into employee personnel files while maintaining confidentiality.
- Assist in drafting communications such as offer letters, scheduling updates, and employee notices.
- Support the tracking and documentation of employee leave requests, FMLA, and other accommodations.
- Provide administrative support for HR projects, audits, and compliance-related activities.
- Assist with HR-related events such as employee appreciation parties, recognition programs, and other engagement initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Customer service experience/knowledge.
- Knowledge of social media platforms.

- Articulate.
- Must be an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in human resources, business, or other relevant degree.
- Computer skills including intermediate-level proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, listening, and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Student member of SHRM a plus.
Pay
$17.75 per hour.

Because this position requires you to perform services in an educational facility, there may be periods when the Company does not require you to perform work (such as winter and summer breaks when food service needs decline or cease). Any such periods during which you do not perform work on the Company’s behalf may be unpaid and deemed a temporary layoff. However, depending on business needs, you may be required to work year-round, potentially at a different location during break periods.
