About the role

The General Merchandise Clerk (“GMC”) is accountable for delivering G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to customers. This versatile role supports multiple areas of store operations—front-end, grocery, e-commerce, produce, and floral—while maintaining outstanding customer service.

Pay

Hourly pay range: $17.10 – $22.85. Starting pay is at step 1 of the collective-bargaining scale.

Responsibilities

• Provide friendly, helpful service while maintaining a professional demeanor and enhancing the customer’s shopping experience (G.O.A.T.)
• Assist customers with questions, product locations, recommendations, and communicate out-of-stock issues or concerns to store management
• Bag groceries carefully and efficiently, separate items properly, and help customers load groceries into their vehicles
• Retrieve and organize shopping carts from the parking lot for customer use
• Stock and refill shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise following store planograms and seasonal guidelines
• Follow CAO bread procedures for working and writing bread orders
• Build and maintain product displays
• Bale cardboard and keep the backroom clean, organized, and free of clutter
• Ensure correct signage, pricing, and routine price changes are accurate and visible
• Maintain clean, safe aisles and display areas, sweep floors, clean spills, and remove trash
• Receive online orders, inspect items for damage or freshness, pack orders properly, and label them clearly for pickup
• Replace or report unavailable or damaged items and update customers on substitutions or delays
• Assist customers by carrying or escorting completed orders to their vehicles
• Cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce; stock and rotate merchandise to maintain freshness
• Monitor produce temperatures, maintain proper storage conditions, and complete logs of damaged or lost merchandise
• Assist with monthly inventory counts and price changes in the Produce department
• Open, price, and stock floral merchandise; maintain neat, attractive displays and remove wilted or damaged products
• Place point-of-sale signs, tags, and promotional materials for floral and GMC produce products
• Support the Produce department by stocking and maintaining the salad wall and other GMC produce items
• Operate store equipment (hand trucks, box cutters, department equipment) safely and efficiently
• Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experience
• Perform all other related duties as assigned, including courtesy clerk tasks

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• High school diploma preferred but not required
• Valid Food Handler / Health Card
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
• Friendly, helpful attitude with a focus on customer satisfaction
• Ability to work well within a team and follow direction with a positive attitude
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Basic math and reading skills for handling pricing, labels, equipment, and inventory
• Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel for up to 4–8 hours per day and lift up to 50 pounds
• Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Must adhere to all store policies and procedures, including safety standards and the collective bargaining agreement
