Pay
Hourly Pay Range: $17.10 - $22.85 (this range represents step 1 to the maximum step for this position in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; starting pay for the successful candidate will be at step 1).
About the role
The General Merchandise Clerk (“GMC”) is accountable for delivering G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to customers. This versatile role supports multiple areas of store operations, including front-end tasks, stocking, e-commerce order fulfillment, and assisting with floral and cut-fruit preparation.
Responsibilities
- Provide friendly, helpful service while maintaining a professional demeanor and enhancing the customer’s shopping experience (G.O.A.T.).
- Assist customers with questions, locating products, product recommendations, and communicate out-of-stock issues or concerns to store management.
- Bag groceries carefully and efficiently, separating items properly; offer and assist customers with loading groceries to their vehicles.
- Ensure shopping carts are regularly gathered from the parking lot and organized at store entrances.
- Stock and refill shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise items; follow CAO bread procedures for working and writing bread orders.
- Build and maintain product displays following store planograms, seasonal guidelines, and store management direction.
- Bale cardboard regularly and maintain a clean, organized, and clutter-free backroom to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
- Ensure correct signage and pricing is visible and accurate, including routine price changes.
- Maintain clean, safe, and hazard-free aisles and display areas; sweep floors, clean up spills, and remove trash as needed.
- Receive online orders, accurately locate and inspect items for damage, defects, or freshness before packing to meet customer expectations.
- Replace or report unavailable or damaged items promptly and update customers on substitutions or delays.
- Pack items properly to avoid damage during transport and label orders clearly for pickup.
- Communicate order progress or issues to store management; assist customers by carrying or escorting completed orders to their vehicles.
- Cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce items for sale; stock and rotate merchandise to maintain freshness and an attractive display.
- Monitor product temperatures and maintain proper storage conditions; maintain logs and records of damaged and lost merchandise.
- Complete price changes and assist the Produce Manager with monthly inventory counts.
- Open, price, and stock floral merchandise while keeping displays neat, attractive, and well-organized to draw customer interest.
- Monitor floral inventory for freshness and quality, removing wilted or damaged products promptly.
- Place point-of-sale signs, tags, and promotional materials for floral and GMC produce products, including routine price updates.
- Support the Produce department by stocking and maintaining the salad wall and other GMC produce items.
- Operate standard store equipment—such as hand trucks, box cutters, and department equipment—safely and efficiently by adhering to established safety protocols.
- Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth department operations and excellent customer experience.
- Perform all other related duties as required and assigned, including courtesy clerk duties.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma is preferred but not required.
- A valid Food Handler / Health Card.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks and responsibilities.
- Friendly, helpful attitude with a focus on customer satisfaction and service at all times.
- Ability to work well within a team and follow direction with a positive attitude.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) with the ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with customers and teammates.
- Basic math and reading skills for handling pricing, labels, equipment, and inventory.
- Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel for up to four to eight hours per day and lift packages and other items (up to 50 pounds).
- Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must maintain a sense of integrity and adhere to all store policies and procedures, including safety standards and the collective bargaining agreement.
