Pay

Hourly pay range: $17.10 – $22.85. This range represents the rates from step 1 to the maximum step for this union-represented position. Starting pay for the successful candidate will be at step 1.

About the role

The General Merchandise Clerk (GMC) delivers G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to customers. This versatile role supports multiple store areas, including front-end operations, stocking, e-commerce order fulfillment, floral, and produce preparation.

Responsibilities

• Provide friendly, professional customer service (G.O.A.T.) and assist with questions, product locations, and out-of-stock issues
• Bag groceries carefully, separate items properly, and help load groceries into customer vehicles
• Retrieve and organize shopping carts from the parking lot
• Stock and refill shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise; follow CAO bread procedures and planograms
• Bale cardboard and maintain a clean, organized, and safe backroom and work environment
• Ensure accurate signage, pricing, and routine price changes; keep aisles and displays clean and hazard-free
• Sweep floors, clean spills, and remove trash to maintain a safe shopping environment
• E-commerce: receive online orders, inspect items for damage or freshness, pack orders securely, and communicate order status or issues
• Assist customers with order pickup and transport completed orders to their vehicles
• Produce: cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce; stock and rotate merchandise; monitor temperatures and storage conditions
• Maintain logs of damaged or lost merchandise; assist with monthly inventory counts
• Floral: open, price, and stock floral merchandise; maintain neat, attractive displays; monitor freshness and remove wilted or damaged products
• Place point-of-sale signs, tags, and promotional materials; support the Produce department with salad wall and GMC produce items
• Operate store equipment (e.g., hand trucks, box cutters) safely and efficiently
• Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experience
• Perform other related duties, including courtesy clerk tasks, as assigned

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• High school diploma preferred but not required
• Valid Food Handler / Health Card
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
• Friendly, customer-focused attitude with strong service orientation
• Ability to work well in a team and follow direction with a positive attitude
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Basic math and reading skills for pricing, labels, equipment, and inventory
• Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel for 4–8 hours per day and lift up to 50 pounds
• Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Adherence to store policies, safety standards, and collective bargaining agreement
