About the role
The General Merchandise Clerk (“GMC”) is accountable for delivering G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to customers. This versatile role supports multiple store operations—front-end, grocery, e-commerce, produce, and floral—while maintaining outstanding customer service.
Pay
Hourly pay range: $17.10 – $22.85. Starting pay is at step 1; the range reflects progression to the maximum step per the collective bargaining agreement.
Responsibilities
- Provide friendly, professional customer service (G.O.A.T.) and assist with questions, product locations, and recommendations
- Bag groceries carefully, separate items properly, and help load purchases into customer vehicles
- Retrieve and organize shopping carts from the parking lot
- Stock, refill, and rotate shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise following planograms and seasonal guidelines
- Follow CAO bread procedures and build/maintain product displays
- Bale cardboard, keep backroom clean and organized, and ensure a safe work environment
- Maintain accurate signage, pricing, and routine price changes
- Keep aisles, displays, and floors clean, safe, and free of hazards; sweep, clean spills, and remove trash
- E-commerce: receive online orders, inspect items for damage/freshness, pack orders securely, and label clearly for pickup
- Replace or report unavailable/damaged items and update customers on substitutions or delays
- Assist customers by carrying or escorting completed orders to their vehicles
- Produce: cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce; stock and rotate merchandise; monitor temperatures and storage conditions
- Maintain logs of damaged/lost merchandise and assist with monthly inventory counts
- Floral: open, price, and stock floral merchandise; maintain neat, attractive displays; monitor freshness and remove wilted/damaged products
- Place point-of-sale signs, tags, and promotional materials; update prices routinely
- Support Produce department by stocking and maintaining the salad wall and other GMC produce items
- Operate store equipment (hand trucks, box cutters, department equipment) safely and efficiently
- Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experience
- Perform all other related duties as assigned, including courtesy clerk tasks
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma preferred but not required
- Valid Food Handler / Health Card
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
- Friendly, customer-focused attitude with strong service orientation
- Ability to work well in a team and follow direction with a positive attitude
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Basic math and reading skills for pricing, labels, equipment, and inventory
- Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel for 4–8 hours per day and lift up to 50 pounds
- Available to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Adherence to store policies, safety standards, and collective bargaining agreement
