About the role
The General Merchandise Clerk (“GMC”) is accountable for delivering G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to customers. This versatile, adaptable role supports multiple store operations—front-end, e-commerce, produce, floral, and general stocking—while maintaining outstanding customer service.
Responsibilities
- Provide friendly, professional service (G.O.A.T.) and enhance the customer’s shopping experience
- Assist customers with questions, product locations, recommendations, and communicate out-of-stock or concerns to management
- Bag groceries carefully, separate items properly, and help load groceries into customer vehicles
- Retrieve and organize shopping carts from the parking lot for customer use
- Stock, refill, and rotate shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise following store planograms and seasonal guidelines
- Follow CAO bread procedures for working and writing bread orders
- Build and maintain product displays, ensuring correct signage, pricing, and routine price changes
- Bale cardboard, maintain a clean and organized backroom, and ensure aisles and displays are safe and hazard-free
- Sweep floors, clean spills, and remove trash to maintain a clean shopping environment
- Receive, inspect, and pack e-commerce orders accurately, replacing or reporting damaged/unavailable items promptly
- Update customers on order substitutions or delays and assist with order pickup by carrying or escorting orders to vehicles
- Cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce; stock and rotate merchandise to maintain freshness
- Monitor product temperatures, maintain storage conditions, and complete logs for damaged or lost merchandise
- Assist with monthly inventory counts and price changes in the Produce department
- Open, price, and stock floral merchandise; maintain neat, attractive displays and remove wilted or damaged products
- Place point-of-sale signs, tags, and promotional materials for floral and GMC produce products
- Support the Produce department by stocking and maintaining the salad wall and other GMC produce items
- Operate store equipment (hand trucks, box cutters, department equipment) safely and efficiently
- Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experience
- Perform all other related duties as assigned, including courtesy clerk tasks
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma preferred but not required
- Valid Food Handler / Health Card
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
- Friendly, customer-focused attitude with strong service orientation
- Ability to work well in a team and follow direction with a positive attitude
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Basic math and reading skills for pricing, labels, equipment, and inventory
- Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel for 4–8 hours per day and lift up to 50 pounds
- Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Adherence to store policies, safety standards, and collective bargaining agreement
Pay
Hourly pay range: $17.10 – $22.85. This range represents step 1 to the maximum step for the position per the collective bargaining agreement. Starting pay is at step 1.
