About the role
The General Merchandise Clerk (“GMC”) is accountable for delivering G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to customers. This versatile, adaptable role supports multiple store areas—front-end, grocery, e-commerce, produce, and floral—handling a variety of tasks based on operational needs.
Compensation
Hourly pay range: $17.10 – $22.85 (starting rate at step 1; maximum step reflects the collective-bargaining agreement).
Responsibilities
- Provide friendly, professional customer service (G.O.A.T.)—answer questions, locate products, make recommendations, and escalate concerns to management.
- Bag groceries carefully, separate items properly, and assist customers with loading groceries into vehicles.
- Retrieve and organize shopping carts from the parking lot.
- Stock, rotate, and refill shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise; follow CAO bread procedures and build displays per planograms.
- Bale cardboard, keep backroom clean and organized, and maintain accurate signage and pricing.
- Sweep floors, clean spills, remove trash, and ensure aisles and displays are safe and hazard-free.
- E-commerce: receive online orders, inspect items for damage/freshness, pack orders securely, label clearly, and update customers on substitutions or delays; carry or escort orders to vehicles.
- Produce: cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce; stock and rotate merchandise; monitor temperatures and storage conditions; complete inventory counts.
- Floral: open, price, and stock merchandise; maintain neat, attractive displays; remove wilted or damaged products; update signage and promotional materials.
- Operate store equipment (hand trucks, box cutters, department tools) safely and follow all safety protocols.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experience.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma preferred but not required.
- Valid Food Handler / Health Card.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple tasks, and prioritize customer satisfaction.
- Strong communication skills (oral and written) and ability to work well in a team.
- Basic math and reading skills for pricing, labels, and inventory.
- Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel for 4–8 hours daily and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Adherence to store policies, safety standards, and collective-bargaining agreement.
