Pay

Hourly pay range: $17.10 – $22.85. This range represents the rates from step 1 to the maximum step for this position under the collective bargaining agreement. Starting pay for the successful candidate will be at step 1.

About the role

The General Merchandise Clerk (“GMC”) delivers G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to customers. This versatile role supports multiple store areas, including front-end operations, stocking, e-commerce order fulfillment, floral, and cut-fruit preparation.

Responsibilities

• Provide friendly, helpful service while maintaining a professional demeanor and enhancing the customer’s shopping experience (G.O.A.T.)
• Assist customers with questions, locating products, product recommendations, and communicating out-of-stock issues or concerns to store management
• Bag groceries carefully and efficiently, separating items properly; offer and assist customers with loading groceries to their vehicles
• Retrieve and organize shopping carts from the parking lot for customer use
• Stock and refill shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise items; follow CAO bread procedures for working and writing bread orders
• Build and maintain product displays following store planograms, seasonal guidelines, and store management direction
• Bale cardboard and maintain a clean, organized, and safe backroom and work environment
• Ensure correct signage and pricing is visible and accurate, including routine price changes
• Maintain clean, safe aisles and display areas; sweep floors, clean spills, and remove trash
• Receive and fulfill e-commerce orders: locate, inspect, and pack items accurately; report or replace damaged or unavailable items; update customers on substitutions or delays
• Assist customers by carrying or escorting completed orders to their vehicles
• Cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce; stock and rotate merchandise to maintain freshness and attractive displays
• Monitor produce temperatures and storage conditions; maintain logs of damaged or lost merchandise; assist with monthly inventory counts
• Open, price, and stock floral merchandise; maintain neat, attractive displays; monitor inventory for freshness and quality
• Place point-of-sale signs, tags, and promotional materials for floral and GMC produce products, including routine price updates
• Support the Produce department by stocking and maintaining the salad wall and other GMC produce items
• Operate store equipment (hand trucks, box cutters, department equipment) safely and efficiently
• Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experience
• Perform all other related duties as assigned, including courtesy clerk tasks

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• High school diploma preferred but not required
• Valid Food Handler / Health Card
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
• Friendly, helpful attitude with a focus on customer satisfaction
• Ability to work well within a team and follow direction with a positive attitude
• Excellent communication skills (oral and written) with customers and teammates
• Basic math and reading skills for handling pricing, labels, equipment, and inventory
• Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel for up to four to eight hours per day and lift up to 50 pounds
• Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Must maintain integrity and adhere to all store policies, safety standards, and the collective bargaining agreement
