About the role

The General Merchandise Clerk (“GMC”) is accountable for delivering G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to customers. This versatile, adaptable role supports multiple store areas and includes front-end duties, stocking, e-commerce order fulfillment, floral and cut-fruit preparation, and other tasks as needed.

Responsibilities

• Provide friendly, professional customer service (G.O.A.T.) and assist with questions, product location, and recommendations
• Bag groceries carefully, separate items properly, and help load groceries into customer vehicles
• Retrieve and organize shopping carts from the parking lot
• Stock and refill shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise; follow CAO bread procedures
• Build and maintain product displays according to store planograms and seasonal guidelines
• Bale cardboard, keep the backroom clean and organized, and maintain a safe work environment
• Ensure accurate signage, pricing, and routine price changes; keep aisles and displays clean and hazard-free
• Sweep floors, clean spills, and remove trash to maintain a clean, safe shopping environment
• Receive, inspect, and pack online orders accurately; report damaged or unavailable items and update customers on substitutions or delays
• Assist customers by carrying or escorting completed orders to their vehicles
• Cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce; stock and rotate merchandise to maintain freshness
• Monitor produce temperatures, maintain storage conditions, and complete logs for damaged or lost merchandise
• Assist with monthly inventory counts and price changes in the Produce department
• Open, price, and stock floral merchandise; maintain neat, attractive displays and remove wilted or damaged products
• Place point-of-sale signs, tags, and promotional materials for floral and GMC produce products
• Support the Produce department by stocking and maintaining the salad wall and other GMC produce items
• Operate store equipment (e.g., hand trucks, box cutters) safely and efficiently
• Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experience
• Perform all other related duties as assigned, including courtesy clerk tasks

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• High school diploma preferred but not required
• Valid Food Handler / Health Card
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
• Friendly, customer-focused attitude with strong communication skills (oral and written)
• Ability to work well in a team and follow direction with a positive attitude
• Basic math and reading skills for handling pricing, labels, equipment, and inventory
• Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel for 4–8 hours per day and lift up to 50 pounds
• Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Adherence to all store policies, safety standards, and the collective bargaining agreement

Pay

Hourly pay range: $17.10 – $22.85. Starting pay is at step 1 of the collective bargaining agreement scale.
