About the role

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Highways and Aviation Fairbanks District seeks an Equipment Operator Journey 1 / 2 to keep Alaska moving. The position involves operating heavy equipment for maintenance tasks, conducting inspections, and responding to emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate various heavy equipment for maintenance tasks, including snow removal, hauling, drainage, and infrastructure repairs.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, operator maintenance, and assist with shop upkeep.
  • Maintain roads, bridges, drainage structures, signage, guardrails, and landscaping.
  • Perform bridge repairs, including painting, sandblasting, and concrete work, with potential for summer travel.
  • Operate plows, sanders, graders, and other equipment for snow removal, apply abrasives, and handle snow haul operations.
  • Respond to road hazards, flooding, debris removal, and other emergencies.
  • Mark and clear obstructions and ensure safe winter working conditions.
  • Set up traffic control for work zones using devices like arrow boards, flagging, and other methods for both winter and summer maintenance activities.
  • Address material spills, typically caused by equipment leaks or accidents.
  • Attend required training (e.g., Traffic Control, First Aid/CPR, OSHA) and train on heavy-duty equipment for snow and ice control, including preparation for the WG 53 test.
  • Perform other tasks assigned, including lower-grade duties, and assist with shop maintenance.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Class B Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at the time of hire. A conditional hire approval can be given to applicants that do not yet possess a Class A CDL.
  • A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire. A conditional hire approval can only be given for N-Tanker endorsement.
  • Must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and pass the required Pre-Employment drug test.

Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment and familiarity with DOT&PF standards and practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Compliance with safety protocols and emergency response procedures.

Skills

  • Proficiency in operating heavy equipment such as snowplows, graders, and sanders.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform routine maintenance tasks.
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with other maintenance crews and responding to emergencies.
  • Knowledge of DOT&PF policies and procedures.

Pay

Equipment Operator Journey 1 - $30.90 / hourly (OT Eligible)
Equipment Operator Journey 2 - $32.76 / hourly (OT Eligible)

Schedule

This is a full-time position based at the Central Maintenance Station, located at MP 101 of the Steese Highway. There is no bunkhouse available at this location; applicants must have reliable transportation to and from the duty station, each day. Expect a dynamic, fast-paced environment with varied responsibilities and conditions. You’ll work independently and as part of a team, often in challenging weather or terrain. Shift work and emergency responses are part of the role, and safety is a priority.
