About the Role

As part of a maintenance crew, this position performs various tasks associated with the year-round maintenance of state highways within the Peninsula District. The work includes operating and servicing heavy and light-duty equipment, maintenance of vegetation, signs, barricades, fences, bridges, culverts, drainage structures, bike paths, and road surfaces within the State Right-of-Way, as well as performing traffic control duties. Perform snow and ice removal with plow/sanders and graders with all attachments. The incumbent will be assigned to the Homer maintenance station.

• Perform traffic control duties.

Work Environment

This position is part of the Homer maintenance crew. The selected candidate will perform year-round highway maintenance and operations tasks within the Peninsula District boundaries.

Requirements

• Valid Alaska Driver’s License.
• Flagger training certificate – State of Alaska work zone traffic control.
• First Aid/CPR certification.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with Tanker Endorsement. Note: HAZMAT endorsement is not essential for hiring but may be required later at the Department’s expense.
• Painting Certificate (HAZMAT) Card. Note: This HAZMAT endorsement is not essential for hiring but may be required later at the Department’s expense.

Minimum Qualifications

Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments. Additional Information

• At the time of the interview, applicants must submit:

  • A copy of their current Commercial Driver’s License with endorsements.
• This position requires a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383). The incumbent must register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse and provide consent for the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
• A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at the time of hire. The proposed appointee must successfully obtain an N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire as a condition of employment.
• Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and cannot start work until confirmation of passing the required pre-employment drug test is received.
