The Director of Human Resources for a mission-driven, community-focused Nonprofit organization is seeking a senior-level human resources professional.

About the role

This is a hybrid (onsite 1 day per week required) and based in Oakland, CA, contract-to-hire opportunity. The role involves shaping people strategy, culture, and organizational development within a values-centered philanthropic environment. The Director will lead HR strategy and operations, partner with executive leadership, oversee HR compliance, foster a culture of belonging, and develop leadership capability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead HR strategy and operations including employee relations, performance management, engagement, and leadership development through an equity-centered lens
  • Partner with executive leadership to design and implement people strategies, organizational development initiatives, and change management efforts
  • Oversee HR compliance, policies, and systems including recruitment, onboarding, benefits, compensation, and offboarding processes in collaboration with internal and external partners
  • Foster a culture of belonging, collaboration, accountability, and psychological safety across teams and leadership levels
  • Develop and support leadership capability through coaching, training, and professional development initiatives
  • Guide implementation of inclusive, values-aligned HR practices that support staff growth, wellness, and organizational effectiveness

Requirements

  • Senior-level human resources experience with demonstrated leadership in HR strategy, organizational development, and employee engagement
  • Experience building inclusive, people-centered workplace practices and supporting leadership development in complex organizations
  • Strong ability to coach managers and leaders in performance, communication, and team development

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of HR compliance frameworks and employment practices, with the ability to navigate California employment standards

Pay

This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with a temporary hourly rate of $72–$89/hour during the contract period. Upon conversion, the annual salary range is $150,000–$185,000, aligned with experience and scope of responsibility.
