Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency
  • Must hold or have the ability to obtain an Athletic Coaching License (7-12) from the New Mexico Public Education Department (details)
  • Must complete the Fundamentals of Coaching online exam offered through the New Mexico Activities Association (www.nmact.org)

Qualifications

  • Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program
  • Previous successful coaching experience in cross country or other major sports
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and commitment to staying current with new theories and procedures
  • Ability to serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instruction and actions

Responsibilities

  • Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training to achieve individual and team success
  • Promote socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes
  • Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation
  • Work with students interested in sports, providing practice support and advice for team success during the season
  • Teach and enforce rules and regulations of the sport
  • Advise, coordinate, and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal

About the Role

Reports to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. On-site attendance is mandatory. The role involves instructing and demonstrating behaviors that lead to both athletic and personal development in student athletes.
