About the role
Univision Chicago is looking for a Temp News Writer to join the team and help carry on the brand promise by informing, educating, and empowering the Hispanic audience. The role involves covering news for Chicago and surrounding areas, working on the daily production of news programs including newscasts and special coverages, and contributing to the daily news rundown, editorial input, and writing of intros and other stories.
The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of compelling storytelling across all platforms, production workflows, and the ability to lead in high‑stress situations. Preference is given to those with market experience or an understanding of Chicago Hispanic demographics, geography, and newsmakers, as well as experience writing for digital and platform‑specific video.
Responsibilities
- Excellent writing skills
- Copy‑edit news stories
- Writing for digital platforms and tailoring to each one
- Translate aptly from English to Spanish
- Revise spelling for graphics and supers
- Quick reaction to breaking news and show news updates
- Provide content for the station’s websites and social media channels
- Strong command of editorial standards, ethics and legal matters pertaining to broadcast
- Preferred experience and/or understanding of the Chicago marketplace
Qualifications
- At least 2 years’ experience in a major news market
- Working knowledge of newsroom operation systems (iNews, vizRT)
- Bilingual with the ability to write fluently in Spanish and English
- Strong preference for candidates with market experience or an understanding of Chicago Hispanic demographics, geography, and newsmakers
- Experience writing for digital and platform‑specific video
- Must be a member of WGBO NABET‑CWA Local 41
Schedule
Flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
