The City of Round Rock’s Public Works Department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Systems Mechanic for the water treatment plant. Depending on qualifications and experience, the position may be filled at either the Systems Mechanic-In-Training level or as a certified Systems Mechanic. Ideal candidates will bring strong technical skills, a commitment to operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and safety.

About the role

Under general supervision, the Systems Mechanic assists with the maintenance and repair of components of the Water Treatment Plant and water distribution systems, including pumps, motors, water storage tanks, motor control panels, remote communications equipment, and pressure regulating valves. This position also monitors chlorine levels and supply pressure of drinking water.

Responsibilities

• Assist in maintaining lift stations by inspecting daily, troubleshooting electrical controls of pump motors, removing and replacing pumps, and working with electricity up to 480 volts A.C.
• Maintain emergency generators and work in various weather conditions.
• Repair or replace pumps and controls, work with heavy motors on cranes, and repair control systems for pressure reducing valves.
• Maintain pump systems and repair high voltage controls up to 2,400 volts to pumping motors.
• Maintain the appearance of sites, including grounds and buildings.
• Troubleshoot and repair pumps, controls, and pressure reducing valves in confined spaces.
• Maintain valves, water lines, and building generators on sites.
• Perform on-call duties, responding to water distribution needs 24/7, including nights, weekends, and during storms.
• Overhaul pressure reducing valves (PRV) in confined spaces, using tools and cranes on trucks, and ensure sites meet TCEQ standards.
• Maintain water storage tanks by climbing water towers, painting as needed, repairing lighting, and maintaining valves.
• Monitor chlorine levels and supply pressure of drinking water.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• For Systems Mechanic-In-Training: Six months of general work experience or a degree/certificate from an accredited institution in Industrial Maintenance, Pump System Hydraulics, Electrical, or Industrial Technology.
• For Systems Mechanic: One (1) year of experience as a mechanic or electrician. Systems mechanic experience preferred.
• Obtain Class D Water Operator certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) within the first 12 months of employment.
• Class C Texas Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one prior to employment.

Pay

• Systems Mechanic-In-Training: $44,720 to $54,080 depending on experience.
• Systems Mechanic: $49,920 to $60,840 depending on experience.
