Water Treatment Plant Operator I / Operator-in-Training

About the role

The City is seeking a full-time Operator I / Operator-in-Training position at the Water Treatment Plant. This role supports current operations and future staffing needs as the City continues to grow and expand.

Responsibilities

• Inspects facility on a scheduled basis to ensure proper operation of plant and equipment and to ensure desired water quality is maintained or achieved.
• Conducts routine tests of water to analyze turbidity, pH, and chlorine; records results on laboratory chart.
• Performs routine mechanical and electrical work involved with the maintenance, repair, and installation of pumps, motors, feeders, and other related equipment.
• Performs daily housekeeping tasks throughout plant (e.g., sweeps and/or mops floor, cleans equipment and furniture, cleans spills, etc.).
• Performs special projects, maintenance, or clean-up tasks as assigned by supervisor.
• Maintains required licensures and certification, if any.
• Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
• Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

Qualifications

• Completion of secondary education (high school diploma or GED equivalent).
• Six (6) months skilled maintenance experience, or equivalent.
• Demonstrable ability to understand system of mechanical and technical procedures, maintain accurate records, and perform manual labor.
• Possession of all required licenses and certifications and be insurable under the city’s vehicle insurance policy.

Licenses and Certifications

• Must possess and maintain OEPA Class I Water Operator’s license.
• Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state of Ohio driver’s license.
• Must remain insurable under the city’s vehicle insurance policy.

Equipment Operated

• Laboratory equipment, computer, copier, fax, telephone, and other office equipment.
• Pick-up truck, front end loader, backhoe, dump truck, grader, mower, skid loader, bucket truck, weed trimmer, cutoff saw, chain pipe snapper, Seimen’s UF/NF units, and other hand and power tools.

Inherently Hazardous or Physically Demanding Working Conditions

• Works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, elevated platforms, and/or runways.
• Ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds.
• Works in a confined space (e.g., manhole).
• Works in an area in which the means of egress is or can be obstructed.
• Exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.).
• Works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms.
• Exposure to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas.
• Exposure to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85 db.
• Exposure to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, or air contaminants.
• Exposure to possible injury due to unclean or unsanitary conditions.
• Exposure to possible injury as a result of electrical shock.
• Exposure to possible injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines.
• Exposure to possible injury from explosions.
• Exposure to possible injury as a result of falling from high places.
• Works around chemicals in containers or in the form of dust, mists, fumes, or vapors.
• Contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons.
• Contact with potentially vicious animals.
• Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions.
• Exposure to hazardous driving conditions.
• May be required to work evenings, nights, second or third shift, or weekends.
• Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• May be required to move objects weighing several hundred pounds.
