Reports to: Water Treatment Plant Operator Supervisor. Non-exempt position requiring satisfactory completion of a twelve-month probationary period. Safety-sensitive role subject to random drug testing.

About the role

Perform general and technical work functions associated with operating the water treatment plant to ensure a continuous, adequate supply of potable drinking water that meets federal and state regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and treat water; mix chemicals; perform laboratory tests.
  • Operate various pumps, valves, and machinery; repair and maintain equipment.
  • Monitor and control treatment plant processes and equipment using SCADA.
  • Operate high service pumps to regulate pressures and tank levels in the distribution system.
  • Maintain dual media filters.
  • Perform laboratory tests for turbidity, chlorine, fluoride, pH, iron, manganese, and bacteriological compliance; make adjustments as needed.
  • Monitor and control chemical addition to the water supply; mix and change chemical containers; maintain proper chemical tank levels.
  • Inspect plant operations for safety, maintenance, and proper process functions.
  • Repair and maintain machines, pumps, and electrical equipment.
  • Train newly hired operators and review their work for compliance.
  • Maintain logs of daily operations, chemical usage, and test results; prepare reports for state agencies.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding water system problems and sewer complaints.
  • Provide information to officials, staff, and the public; handle telephone communications.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must obtain a state-certified Class III water treatment license within 12 months of hire.
  • One year of experience in water treatment systems maintenance or operations preferred.
  • Ability to operate and maintain machinery, tools, and laboratory equipment.
  • Basic math and chemistry skills; proficiency in oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge of federal and state safe drinking water regulations, water system operations, and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Ability to compile, organize, and maintain records and reports in compliance with regulations.
  • Must work cooperatively with others and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
  • May be required to operate a vehicle and adhere to safe driving policies.

Schedule

Sunday – Saturday, 40 hours per week. Shifts rotate every eight weeks. Includes holidays, weekends, and on-call availability 24/7. May require work on religious holidays.

Physical demands

  • Must be physically able to operate machinery, tools, and equipment (e.g., computers, pumps, chemical feed systems, hand/power tools).
  • Requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motion.
  • Must exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Requires moderate eye/hand/foot coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Must differentiate between colors and shades of color.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via telephone, two-way radio, and in person.
  • Must handle routine and emergency situations with minimal stress.
