About the role

The Water Treatment Plant Mechanic position is responsible for performing a variety of skilled work as it relates to equipment, machinery, and components in City of Yuma Water operating plants. The ideal candidate will inspect, maintain, adjust, repair, install, and replace water equipment, machinery, and components.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, adjusts, repairs, installs and replaces Water equipment, machinery, and components in Water operating plants.
  • Inspects Water facilities, equipment and systems; performs work within scope of authority, under proper supervision, and in accordance with all quality standards, safety regulations and procedures.
  • Checks facilities and equipment to verify proper operating conditions; recognizes abnormally operating equipment; uses standard methods and skills to diagnose conditions, and identify maintenance needs.
  • Repairs equipment and components and performs preventive and predictive maintenance on mechanical and electromechanical equipment and components as directed; notifies supervisors of problems beyond the scope of authority.
  • Verifies equipment functions meet job specifications and technical codes; reads and interprets technical manuals; assists with maintenance of facilities and grounds.
  • Tests and maintains backflow prevention devices.
  • Custom fabricates material and equipment; operates heavy equipment.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the "Yuma Way", and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years of mechanical and electrical repair, maintenance, and installation experience, preferably in an industrial environment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Knowledge of: City policies and procedures; Tools, equipment and procedures used in Water system maintenance and repairs; Safe work practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions in a Water treatment plant; Federal and state safety rules and regulations and emergency response procedures in Water treatment plant environments.
  • Skills: Reading and interpreting technical plans, schematics and specifications; Reading and interpreting gauges and recording devices; Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures; Making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment; Following safe work practices, and verbal and written instructions; Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers; Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Qualifications

  • A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required. A valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License will be required within twelve months of hire. Water Grade 1 certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is preferred. Additional technical training and certifications may be required.
