About the role

The Water Plant Mechanic is a dynamic role that involves diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment and facilities. On any given day, the Plant Mechanic may perform welding activities, program and install PLCs, calibrate, repair, and maintain instruments and control systems, purchase parts and supplies, and assist with the general maintenance of facilities and grounds. We are searching for a motivated individual who is willing to learn and work as part of our highly skilled team.

About the City of Grand Junction Water Services Division

The City of Grand Junction Water Department provides drinking water for about 30,000 customers. Our customers enjoy being the first users of pristine snowmelt off the Grand Mesa, which is diverted out of Kannah Creek and into Juniata Reservoir before being piped 20 miles to the Water Treatment Plant. The Water Department has a staff of 32 employees, working together in areas such as Pipeline Maintenance, Water Treatment, Water Supply, Customer Service, and Environmental Laboratory Services in order to provide excellent service to our customers. Our employees are responsible for monitoring and maintaining over 300 miles of pipe, two water treatment plants, 10,000 taps, and 86 square miles of watershed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repair on water and treatment plants and related equipment and facilities.
  • Install, align, test, maintain, recondition, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and hydraulic systems, components, and parts.
  • Replace piping and recondition valves.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and servicing on equipment and facilities; pack, lubricate, clean, paint, and weld equipment.
  • Fabricate and weld parts and equipment; weld cracked or broken parts of ferrous and nonferrous metals.
  • Design, layout, and fabricate new structures and parts including drilling, milling, and lathe work as required.

This position is a safety-sensitive position, which means you will be subject to random drug screens due to the nature of the work performed.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of plant maintenance and repair experience.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver's license.
  • Some assignments in this classification may require possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Colorado Class A Commercial driver's license and/or a Water Operator's D License and/or Collections/Distribution I, II, III, and IV certificates.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by specialized training in the areas of mechanical equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
