Veterinary Technician Inpatient- Equine (Overnight)

Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Veterinary Technician – Equine Inpatient to provide specialized care for equine patients, instruct veterinary students, and support clinical operations.

About the role

This position delivers comprehensive patient care—including physical exams, medication administration (IV, IM, PO, SQ), constant monitoring, and hygiene—for all equine inpatients admitted through emergency care, medicine, surgery, and theriogenology. The technician will directly instruct senior veterinary students and student workers in technical aspects of equine patient care, monitor the welfare of University-owned horses (including research subjects), and assist clinicians with procedures and emergency case receiving.

Schedule

Rotating overnight shifts: Weekdays 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM (Monday–Thursday) and weekends 7:00 PM – 8:00 AM (Friday–Sunday). Rotating holiday coverage and scheduling flexibility are required.

Responsibilities

• Instruct veterinary students in equine patient exams, catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, and general horse handling.
• Assist clinicians, students, and residents with admission, patient restraint, and diagnostic procedures for equine cases.
• Provide direct patient care, including physical exams, medication administration, catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, sample collection (blood, fecal, urine), and fluid therapy.
• Maintain floor stock and biosecurity in ICU, inpatient/outpatient barns, Isolation, main treatment areas, and procedural areas.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field qualifying for certification.
• Active Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine license as a Veterinary Technician or eligibility to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire.
• Completion of a rabies pre-exposure vaccination series (covered by Auburn University) and maintenance of adequate rabies antibody titer (≥0.5 IU/mL) per CDC guidelines.

Qualifications

Candidates will be hired at one of three levels based on education and experience:

• Level I: Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology or related field.
• Level II: Associate’s degree plus 2 years of experience in a veterinary hospital.
• Level III: Associate’s degree plus 4 years of experience in a veterinary hospital.

Degrees may substitute for experience.
