About the role

This position provides patient care—including physical exams, medication administration (IV, IM, PO, SQ), constant patient monitoring, and hygiene—for all equine patients admitted through emergency care, medicine, surgery, and theriogenology, as well as all in-house patients. The technician will directly instruct senior veterinary students and student workers in the technical aspects of patient care, monitor the welfare of university-owned horses (including those in research projects), and assist clinicians with procedures and emergency case receiving.

Schedule

Rotating overnight shifts: Weekdays (Monday–Thursday, 9 PM–7 AM) and weekends (Friday–Sunday, 7 PM–8 AM). Rotating holiday coverage and scheduling flexibility required.

Responsibilities

• Instruct veterinary students in equine patient exams, catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, and general horse handling.
• Assist clinicians, students, and residents with admission, patient restraint, and diagnostic procedures for equine cases.
• Provide direct patient care, including physical exams, medication administration, catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, obtaining blood/fecal/urine samples, and fluid therapy.
• Maintain floor stock and biosecurity in the hospital ICU, inpatient/outpatient barns, Isolation, main treatment areas, and procedural areas.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Rabies pre-exposure vaccination series (cost covered by Auburn University) and maintenance of adequate rabies antibody titer (≥0.5 IU/mL) per CDC guidelines.

Qualifications

Depending on education and experience, the selected candidate will be hired at Level II or III:

• Level II: 2 years of experience in a veterinary hospital environment.
• Level III: 4 years of experience in a veterinary hospital environment, including at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.

No substitutions allowed for education. Degrees may be accepted in lieu of experience.
