Tutoring Center Coordinator
About the role
This Tutoring Center position is housed within the Division of Enrollment Management, within the unit of Student Success and Retention (SS&R). The Tutoring Center (TC) provides services that facilitate TCNJ students' learning and persistence as they meet academic challenges throughout their academic careers. Trained in principles and practices of International College Reading and Learning Association certification, peer tutors assist students to master course content and develop learning skills, including problem-solving, analytical reading, writing researched arguments, oral presentation techniques, test-taking strategies, and time management.
Responsibilities
- Administrative Responsibilities
- Approves tutor timecards and monitors payroll, working with Tutoring Support Specialist on data collection for their cohort
- Schedules weekly GA/Staff meetings and sets meeting agendas
- Affirms that GAs meet their hourly commitments in compliance with contracts issued by Graduate Studies
- Manages eTutoring program (recruiting, hiring, scheduling, contract compliance)
- Represents TC at campus events and programs
- Tutor Training Curriculum and Assessments
- Mets 5-week tutor training course goals (IDS 291), ensuring alignment with College Reading and Learning certification for their cohort
- Proposes data-informed updates/revision to tutor training curriculum annually and works with Supervisor on program assessments
- Captures and facilitates tutor focus groups and a tutor leadership program
- Analyzes and reports on training and survey assessments for their cohort
- Tutor Hiring, Training, and Supervision of Cohort Tutors
- Makes data-informed hiring decisions for their cohorts annually
- Responsible for hiring, training, and directly supervising tutors in the Schools of Science, Business, Engineering, and NHS
- Facilitates Techniques of Tutoring (IDS 291) tutor training courses for their own cohort of tutors
- Hires, coordinates training, and manages scheduling of eTutors with the National eTutoring Consortium
- Manages scheduling of tutor events and communications
- Staff Leadership and Supervision
- Hires, trains, and supervises 2-4 Graduate Assistants and a student-worker Communications Assistant annually
- Manages PR and social media for Tutoring Center
- Models effective communication practices, collaboration, and inclusive support for all students
- Provides GA guidance in end-of-semester reporting and analysis of data
- Ongoing Tutor Development
- Develops in collaboration with the Supervisor post-training programming for tutors, in service to: Enhancement of tutor skill sets, Responding to evolving student/faculty needs, Fostering tutor community, Facilitating frictionless transfer of information (Tutor Town Halls, Tutor Updates, Tutor Appreciation events, etc.)
- Collaboration with Faculty/Staff
- Engages with academic departments and professional staff to identify and deliver data-informed student-centered learning support services where needed most in their cohort
- Reports to Supervisor on metrics and presents proposals for targeted need-based services
- Plans and facilitates tutor training for tutors hired in cohort Schools
Requirements
MA degree in higher education or related field. Minimum of 3-5 years working in higher education in student learning/tutoring support programs. Leadership and supervisory experience. Strong working knowledge of demands, opportunities, and curricular challenges within higher education; familiarity with the structure and hierarchy within Academic Affairs. Strong ability to communicate, problem-solve, supervise, and collaborate with professional and student staff. Ability to successfully optimize digital tools like MS Suite, Google Suite, and Learning Management Systems. Skilled at learning new software and web-based applications. Strong organizational and time management skills. Proven mission-driven work ethic, commitment to student success, and ability to prioritize action steps.
Qualifications
Experience with teaching and facilitating a student training course in higher education. Experience with assisting faculty and staff to identify areas of student need, and to provide and assess relevant services. Experience with the unique support needs of students in STEM. Experience with developing inclusive support services for a diverse population of undergraduate students, and with collaborating effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
Skills
Strong communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficiency in MS Suite, Google Suite, and Learning Management Systems. Familiarity with data analysis and reporting tools. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities. Strong organizational and time management skills. Skilled at learning new software and web-based applications.
