Summary
This role is responsible for leading and supporting a team of drivers, ensuring strong performance, safety, and service standards are consistently met. You’ll oversee day-to-day transportation operations for an assigned terminal, including managing equipment and coordinating resources to keep product moving efficiently and reliably. This position also plays a key role in building relationships, supporting customer needs, and identifying opportunities for growth within the market.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support a team of drivers and terminal staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and addressing employee concerns
- Champion a strong safety culture by modeling safe behaviors and ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements (DOT, OSHA, EPA)
- Oversee day-to-day transportation operations at the terminal, including scheduling loads, assigning equipment, and adjusting plans to meet changing business needs
- Manage fleet and equipment readiness, ensuring assets are available, well-maintained, and operating efficiently through coordination with internal teams and vendors
- Monitor driver and contractor performance through reporting tools, site visits, and ride-alongs, including Hours of Service (HOS) compliance and audits
- Build and maintain strong relationships with contract carriers, vendors, retailers, and internal partners to support reliable product movement and service
- Analyze operational performance and implement improvements to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and meet customer service expectations
- Support business growth and market development efforts, including evaluating opportunities, pricing considerations, and contributing to overall profitability
- Track and report on key performance metrics, using weekly, monthly, and annual reporting to drive results aligned with company goals
- Ensure accurate timekeeping and payroll support, including daily timecard review and bi-weekly approvals
- Coordinate product movement across a variety of commodities and equipment types, ensuring the right resources are in place to meet customer and operational needs
Key Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of transportation and safety regulations, including FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and EPA
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex situations and make sound decisions
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across teams, locations, and with external partners such as vendors and contract carriers
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Typical Education
Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a 4-year college or university
Relevant Experience
- 3+ years of leadership experience or equivalent training, with a focus on leading teams and driving performance
- Experience in transportation, logistics, or commercial trucking environments strongly preferred
- A valid CDL is highly desired, but not required
