About the Role

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis and contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize response of crews
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors
  • Operates light and heavy equipment
  • Performs maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or equivalent in general education
  • 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance-related work (experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent)
  • Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with 'N' endorsement code at time of application

Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Considerable knowledge of incident management procedures and inventory/stock control procedures
  • Expert skill in operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Proficient skill in leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Proficient skill in coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Proficient skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Ability to maintain a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment
  • Effective communication, both verbally and in writing

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat (below 32°F and/or above 100°F for more than one hour)
  • Subject to noise and vibration
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation
  • Air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
  • Required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, or other devices)
  • Works frequently in small/crawl spaces, manholes, or areas that can cause claustrophobia
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Balancing: Walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time
  • Walking: Moving on foot to accomplish tasks, including long distances or from one work site to another
  • Lifting: Raising objects from lower to higher positions or horizontally to a different position
  • Close visual acuity for data/figures, computer screens, extensive reading, visual inspection of small defects/parts, using measurement devices, assembly or fabrication of parts, operating machines (e.g., drill presses, power saws, mills), and operating motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

Conditions of Employment

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions
  • This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations
  • Must maintain regular and dependable attendance and adhere to established work schedules
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays, as required
  • Must be willing and able to work beyond regularly scheduled hours when operational needs require
  • Must participate in a rotating on-call schedule, when applicable to the position
  • Must wear employer-provided personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all applicable safety policies, procedures, and regulations

Pay

Monthly: $4,523.16 - $7,253.83
Yearly: $54,278 - $87,046
