Transmission Line Engineer | PE

This role sits within the transmission department and focuses on the engineering and design of high-voltage transmission lines that support utility customers. The Transmission Line Engineer collaborates closely with senior engineers, in-house teams, and client engineers and designers to deliver complete project solutions from concept through construction.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering and design activities for transmission line projects, including engineering analysis, route selection, material acquisition, structural and foundation design, and project and construction management.
  • Prepare comprehensive project construction documents, such as plan and profile drawings, detailed design drawings, engineering and material specifications, construction specifications, project schedules, and bills of material.
  • Develop project design alternatives and prepare corresponding cost estimates to support decision-making and project planning.
  • Design new transmission facilities with voltages ranging from 12 kV to 765 kV, ensuring designs meet technical, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Utilize PLS-CADD to model and analyze transmission line design projects, ensuring accurate and efficient design solutions.
  • Conduct contractor bid and construction meetings and help ensure that work activities are performed safely, in accordance with project plans, established schedules, internal policies, rules, standards, and applicable external regulations.
  • Coordinate effectively with governmental and regulatory agencies and contractors to secure necessary project permits and approvals.
  • Provide leadership within project teams to facilitate timely project completion, mentor and train other engineers, and support the development of measurable goals and objectives for the work area.
  • Function as a project lead for transmission projects, overseeing design activities and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project milestones.
  • Coordinate work activities of other team members within the work group and department to complete transmission projects efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide training, guidance, and technical support to lower-level employees to build team capability and ensure consistent design quality.
  • Initiate corrective actions when substation-related project objectives or milestones are not being met, and support problem resolution to keep projects on track.
  • Work under the supervision of higher-level engineers while progressively taking on more responsibility as experience grows.
  • Complete occasional site visits to observe field conditions, support construction activities, and verify that designs are implemented correctly.

Requirements

  • Two to five years of experience in utilities working with transmission line design.
  • Two to five years of experience completing engineering projects from start to finish, including planning, design, and implementation.
  • Two to five years of experience scoping, estimating, and ordering materials for transmission line projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering; an ABET-accredited degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering may count toward years of experience.
  • Proficiency in transmission line design principles and practices, including high-voltage applications.
  • Hands-on experience using PLS-CADD for modeling and designing transmission line projects.
  • Experience with design engineering in a transmission or civil engineering context.
  • Ability to prepare detailed engineering documents, drawings, specifications, and bills of material.
  • Strong coordination and communication skills to work effectively with internal teams, client engineers, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Capability to lead aspects of projects and guide less experienced team members while working under the direction of senior engineers.

Skills

  • EIT (Engineer in Training) license is desirable but not required.
  • Experience using AutoCAD or similar design tools in support of transmission line or civil engineering projects.
  • Background in civil engineering or structural design related to transmission structures and foundations.
  • Familiarity with high-voltage transmission systems and related industry standards and regulations.
  • Experience participating in or leading contractor bid meetings and construction coordination meetings.
  • Ability to develop project schedules and cost estimates and support project and construction management activities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to initiate corrective actions when project objectives are not being met.
  • Interest in mentoring and training lower-level engineers and designers within a collaborative team environment.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00 per hour.
