Responsibilities
- Functions as an interdisciplinary team member performing a wide range of services in clinic and hospital-based laboratories with direct patient care, including venipuncture and appropriate post-care of phlebotomy site.
- Collects and processes specimens, performs receiving desk duties, scheduling functions, and waived point-of-care laboratory testing.
- Assists with difficult blood draws and other services unique to the work area.
- Maintains positive patient identification at all times, ensuring accurate collection and preparation of specimens for analysis.
- Performs specimen collections and processing safely, accurately, professionally, and in a timely manner.
- May prep containers with reagents or specimens for testing, storage, and shipping/transport to internal lab testing areas.
- May perform order entry, retrieve and verify patient collection data, and note special patient instructions using appropriate sources.
- May perform specialty collections.
- Works in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team, setting priorities for specimen collection and workload based on requests.
- Employs standard precautions, infection control, and proper isolation techniques.
- Uses various computer information systems daily.
- Applies critical thinking skills to adhere to established directions and guidelines in standard operating procedures by Mayo Clinic Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.
- Demonstrates professional communication skills and proper telephone etiquette.
- Maintains confidentiality, trustworthiness, and the ability to manage stressful situations with empathy and positive communication.
- Interacts professionally with patients, families, physicians, allied health staff, and visitors.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Works flexible hours to meet workload demands and accommodates schedule changes.
- Performs physical tasks including lifting, standing for long periods, and pushing/pulling lab equipment and patient wheelchairs.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant program, or equivalent (e.g., new phlebotomy graduate); OR
- 3 years of work experience in phlebotomy/medical assisting in a healthcare setting; OR
- Certified by a national association for phlebotomy or medical assisting (e.g., ASCP, AMT, NHA) with 1 year of clinical experience.
- Prior experience with phlebotomy, specimen processing, or clinical laboratory preferred.
- Familiarity with lifespan growth and development, basic anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Must be adaptable, well-organized, and possess effective, professional interpersonal skills.
- Must accurately read specimen labels and follow standard operating procedures.
- Must be capable of troubleshooting and problem-solving regarding laboratory procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to distinguish colors.
- Must exercise caution to avoid potential exposure to hazards.
- Foreign-trained lab personnel must provide a detailed equivalency High School evaluation (US equivalent degree) at the applicant's expense.

Pay
$20.00 – $25.59 per hour
Schedule
- Full Time (80 hours per pay period).
- Schedule Details: Monday–Friday, 11:30 AM–8:00 PM.
- Weekend Schedule: Every other weekend, 11:30 AM–8:00 PM.
