Incumbents in these specialty classes help persons committed to State correctional facilities in the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation prepare to become productive and contributing members of society by training them in academic subjects and by helping them develop socially acceptable attitudes and interests.

Responsibilities

Provide both individual and group instruction in academic subjects.
Conduct assessment and testing of students.
Participate as members of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
Supervise student conduct in the classroom and assume general custody responsibilities in emergencies.
Plan, assign, and supervise work; maintain control and discipline in the classroom.
Control all materials and equipment that may be used as potential weapons.
Prepare courses of study and daily lesson plans.
Counsel students on progress in the instructional program and help them set and meet educational needs and goals.
Participate in program evaluation and extracurricular programs.
Prevent escapes and injury to students, themselves, others, or property.
Inspect premises and search for contraband, weapons, or illegal drugs.
Work as relief teachers in specialties other than those for which they were hired.
Collaborate with treatment teams combining services in custody, academic, vocational, psychiatric, and casework areas.
Provide educational information to help team members determine each student's treatment needs.
Participate in the development and continuing revision of curriculum in new and developing programs.

Requirements

Willingness to continue educational development.
Ability to work in a State correctional facility and participate in group-oriented treatment programs.
Maintain an empathetic and objective understanding of incarcerated persons, youthful offenders, residents, and patients.
Demonstrate teaching ability or potential for teaching.
Emotional stability, tact, patience, open-mindedness, and high moral standards.
Sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful physical, mental, and emotional situations without compromising health and well-being.
Ability to handle sole responsibility for the supervision of incarcerated persons and protection of personal and real property.

If meeting qualifications through education, unofficial transcripts/diploma must be included for verification. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment. Foreign degrees/transcripts must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency through a NACES-approved agency.
