TEACHER (HIGH SCHOOL-GENERAL EDUCATION) (CORRECTIONAL FACILITY)

About the Role

Under the general supervision of the Principal and the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Academic Instruction (SAI), the Academic Teacher implements the California Department of Education (CDE) Adult School learning goals and objectives. Based on incarcerated students’ learning needs, assessment results from the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS), and other educational assessment tools, the teacher develops lesson plans, assigns coursework, and provides a course of study tailored to the specific academic program.

The teacher provides instruction using several delivery methods (based on individual student needs) such as one-on-one, small group, and/or large group instruction on a pull-out basis. The teacher maintains direct student contact related to the necessary amount of time based on student learning needs and group activities. The teacher also provides guidance to paraprofessional Teaching Assistants (TAs), Incarcerated Person(s) Student Aides, Incarcerated Person(s)-Clerks, and Incarcerated Person(s) Tutors.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) requires each full-time employee to receive a 3% reduction in pay in exchange for five (5) hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Salaries listed do not reflect this change.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement lesson plans based on student learning needs and assessment results.
• Provide instruction through one-on-one, small group, and large group methods.
• Maintain direct student contact to support learning needs and group activities.
• Guide and supervise paraprofessional Teaching Assistants, Incarcerated Person(s) Student Aides, Clerks, and Tutors.
• Utilize assessment tools such as TABE and CASAS to tailor instruction.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid California teaching credential or equivalent as required by the California Department of Education.
• Include certificate/document/credential number on the state application (STD. 678) in the Licenses section for verification.
• Unofficial transcripts/diploma may be required if meeting qualifications through education.
• Foreign degrees/transcripts must be verified for U.S. equivalency through a NACES-approved agency.
• Candidates new to CDCR/CCHCS must submit to a background investigation, including Live Scan Fingerprinting and a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment.
• Must comply with E-Verify requirements to confirm employment authorization.

Pay

• Hourly: $43.55 - $87.60
• Daily: $348.41 - $700.79
• Monthly: $3,932.25 - $12,847.82

New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable.
