About the role

The Taxation Division promotes voluntary compliance with all tax laws through information, education, assistance, and customer service. As a Tax Examiner I in the Taxpayer Service Division, you will review tax returns for accuracy and completeness, resolve errors, and contact taxpayers to obtain missing information. You may also analyze accounting files, issue refunds or bills, calculate penalty and interest, collect delinquent taxes, handle taxpayer complaints, adjust discrepancies, and collaborate with other taxing authorities such as the IRS or local municipalities.

The Service Centers serve as the “face” of the Taxation Division, providing face-to-face accessibility to taxpayers in Denver Metro, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Fort Collins, and Grand Junction. You will work collaboratively within the Customer Contact Group to promote voluntary compliance through education, assistance, and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Offer friendly, courteous, and complete customer service by addressing the tax needs of walk-in taxpayers.
  • Respond to taxpayer questions via email and mailed forms.
  • Direct customers to the correct areas by identifying their problems and needs.
  • Answer ambiguous questions related to tax forms, statutes, regulations, DOR policies, delinquencies, and assessments.
  • Promote voluntary compliance by researching customer problems, identifying solutions, and taking corrective actions in accordance with policies, statutes, and regulations.
  • Assist with sales tax, wage withholding, and income tax returns.
  • Coordinate protest solutions with other DOR areas and agencies through your supervisor.
  • Analyze and adjust returns, accounts, and customer information using DOR systems.

This position is located in one of our Service Centers and requires in-person work Monday through Friday.

Requirements

  • Residency in the State of Colorado at the time of application.
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Two (2) years of experience in a customer service environment.
  • A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, or a related field may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Document this experience in detail in your application.

Preferred Qualifications

  • State experience with GenTax.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations. A pre-employment evaluation of tax records/accounts will be conducted.
  • Final candidates must complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions may require scheduled background investigations.
  • If driving a State-owned vehicle is required, you must maintain a safe driving record and a valid driver’s license. Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be reviewed for compliance with the Universal Driving Standards Policy.
