About the role

The Tax Examiner I position in the Taxpayer Service Division of the Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOR) serves as a key member of the Service Centers team. This role involves reviewing tax returns for accuracy and completeness, ensuring returns can be processed as filed, resolving errors, and contacting taxpayers to obtain missing information. Additionally, Tax Examiners analyze accounting files, issue refunds or bills, calculate penalties and interest, collect delinquent taxes, handle taxpayer complaints, adjust discrepancies, and collaborate with other taxing authorities.

Responsibilities

  • Offer friendly, courteous, and complete customer service to all walk-ins and respond to questions via email and mailed forms.
  • Direct customers to the correct areas, answer ambiguous questions related to tax forms, statutes, and regulations, and promote voluntary compliance with tax laws.
  • Assist with sales tax, wage withholding, and income tax returns, coordinate protest solutions with other DOR areas and other agencies, and analyze and adjust returns, accounts, and customer information using DOR systems.
  • Work closely with a close-knit team to support each other and maintain a collaborative environment.

Requirements

This position requires a high school diploma or GED, two years of experience in a customer service environment, and a combination of education and experience in accounting, business, economics, finance, or a related field. State experience with GenTax is preferred, along with demonstrated communication skills, multitasking abilities, and proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $46,988 - $56,230 annually.

Schedule

This position is full-time and requires working Monday through Friday.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations.
  • Must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of tax records/accounts.
  • Must complete a successful background investigation and reference check.
  • Must comply with the Universal Driving Standards Policy and the new Fleet Vehicle Policy.
  • Must operate a vehicle as part of the position.
  • Must utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle.
