About the role

The Tax Examiner I position within the Taxpayer Service Division of the Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOR) serves as a key member of the Service Centers team. This role involves reviewing tax returns for accuracy and completeness, ensuring returns can be processed as filed, resolving errors, and contacting taxpayers to obtain missing information. Additionally, Tax Examiners analyze accounting files, issue refunds or bills, calculate penalties and interest, collect delinquent taxes, handle taxpayer complaints, adjust discrepancies, and collaborate with other taxing authorities.

Responsibilities

  • Offer friendly, courteous, and complete customer service to all walk-ins and respond to questions via email and mailed forms.
  • Direct customers to the correct areas and answer ambiguous questions related to tax forms, statutes, regulations, DOR policies, delinquencies, and assessments.
  • Promote voluntary compliance with tax laws by researching customer problems, identifying solutions, and taking corrective actions in accordance with policies, statutes, and regulations.
  • Aid in sales tax, wage withholding, and income tax returns.
  • Coordinate protest solutions with other DOR areas and other agencies through the supervisor.
  • Analyze and adjust returns, accounts, and customer information using DOR systems.

Requirements

This position requires a high school diploma or GED, two years of experience in a customer service environment, and a combination of education and experience in accounting, business, economics, finance, or a related field. Demonstrated ability to communicate with people outside the organization, strong problem-solving skills, and proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED AND two years of experience in customer service environment.
  • Education and Experience: A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, or a related field as determined by the Department may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications: State experience with GenTax, demonstrated ability to communicate with people outside the organization, strong attention to detail, and proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.

Skills

Adaptability, strong computer software applications proficiency, and a willingness and desire to learn and grow in an evolving atmosphere are essential skills for this role.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $41,693 - $53,950 annually.

Schedule

This position is located in an office and requires working in person Monday through Friday.
