TAX AUDITOR, EMPLOYMENT DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
About the role
The Employment Development Department (EDD) Tax Branch has an immediate opening for a Tax Auditor in the Van Nuys Area Audit Office. This position may be filled at the Tax Auditor or Associate Tax Auditor level. You will conduct employment tax audits and investigations of California businesses, provide education to employers, and play a crucial role in ensuring workers receive proper benefit coverage while promoting fair business practices.
What you will do
- Receive on-the-job and formal training
- Conduct in-person payroll tax audits and investigations for California-based companies
- Learn, follow, and apply provisions of the California Unemployment Insurance Code, California Code of Regulations Title 22, California Labor Code, and California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board decisions
- Interact with business owners and/or their representatives to understand their business operations and internal controls
- Interview workers and contractors to discuss their working relationship and determine proper classification
- Gather relevant information to determine correct classification of workers and wages
- Examine financial records to reconcile reported taxes with employer payroll reports
- Prepare detailed audit reports to support audit findings and recommendations
- Explain audit findings to business owners and/or their representatives
- Attend meetings and participate in Branch and Division-sponsored trainings
Pay
- Tax Auditor, Range A: $4,695.00 - $6,173.00 per month
- Tax Auditor, Range B: $5,805.00 - $7,632.00 per month
- New to State candidates hired into minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable
- Tax Auditors may be eligible for Recruitment Hiring Above Minimum (HAM) salary rate of $5,528 per month (Range A hires only)
- Associate Tax Auditor: $6,646.00 - $8,740.00 per month
Schedule
- Work Shift: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Work Week: Monday - Friday
- Telework: Hybrid (subject to change as business needs arise; employees must reside in California to telecommute)
- Permanent, Full Time position
Location
Headquartered at 6150 Van Nuys Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91401. Travel expenses to and from assigned headquarters are the responsibility of the employee.

Eligibility
Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, eligible for reinstatement, have list or LEAP eligibility, are in the process of obtaining list eligibility, have SROA and/or Surplus eligibility, or are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may apply. SROA and Surplus candidates receive priority.
Examination requirement
To apply, you must obtain list eligibility by taking and passing the Tax Auditor examination. If you already have list eligibility, you do not need to retake unless it has expired. The Associate Tax Auditor is a departmental promotional exam for EDD employees only, with the next administration tentatively scheduled for May 2027.
