This position functions as a high-level, confidential Administrative Assistant to both the Public Relations Director and the Public Information Officer of Municipal Light & Power.

Example of Duties

  • Provides support as an administrative assistant to the Public Relations Director and staff on a variety of community relations activities.
    • Maintains sponsorship and contribution records;
      • Preparing and tracking purchasing requisitions;
      • Performing and reconciling online purchases and procurement card transactions;
      • Ordering and maintaining inventory of promotional items and office supplies;
      • Preparation of travel related documents and expense reports.
    • Drafts responses to routine correspondence;
      • Aid in preparing utility newsletters;
      • Aid in preparation of annual report and various related communication materials.
    • Make arrangements for travel, briefings, meetings, etc.
      • Assists with supervision and coordination of volunteers for special events and projects.
      • Aids in writing of press releases on programs and schedules and responding to media requests.
      • Covers arrangements for various exhibits and displays.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

  • Graduation from high school, GED or equivalent, plus five years work experience in office clerical and secretarial functions.
    • This position requires applicants to pass a standardized typing test with a speed of 35 words per minute net.

  • Graduation from secretarial school, business college or vocational school with at least five (5) years clerical or secretarial experience; including prior experience working in a pubic relations or public informaton office.
  • College coursework in journalism, communication, public relations or English also desirable.

Additional Important Information

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures related to the daily communication/media activity of a Public Relations office.
  • Knowledge of various functions of multiple office systems and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and proficiently orally and verbally with others; work cooperatively as a team member.
  • Ability to write clear, concise public information material.
  • Skill in handling inquiries efficiently and with discretion.

  • In order to be considered for this position which requires skill to type at a net of 35 WPM net, applicants must document his/her typing speed on the application.

  • If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicants Alaska Drivers License and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska Drivers License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history.
