Survey Instrument Operator II

The Survey Instrument Operator II operates various types of survey equipment, including electronic total stations, GPS base stations and receivers, data collectors (survey controllers), digital levels, and automatic levels. As part of the field survey crew, the Instrument Operator works under supervision to assist the Survey Crew Chief with Boundary Surveys, Topographic Surveys, Construction Layout, Utility Surveys, and other assigned surveying tasks.

Responsibilities

• Arrive at work on time, properly dressed, and prepared for daily assignments
• Assist Survey Crew Chief in researching and gathering information
• Clear brush and trees on lines using a machete and brush axe
• Set up appropriate safety signs and cones; wear required safety equipment
• Locate metallic markers using magnetic location equipment
• Set up tripods with optical and/or laser plummet over specified points on even and uneven terrain
• Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked survey truck
• Manage batteries by keeping them charged and clean
• Set up new projects in data collector and upload/download files
• Use prescribed point and line coding, and correctly save collected points
• Represent the company professionally and respectfully
• Follow proper field procedures for various types of surveys
• Identify toxic plants, dangerous animals, and insects
• Perform basic first aid
• Obtain OSHA 10-hour safety certification (provided by the company)

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 6 months of experience with a functional understanding of basic field crew operations
• Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
• Ability to work and carry heavy objects in extreme weather conditions and harsh terrain
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and work ethic
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Problem-solving and innovation capabilities
• Results-oriented mindset
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
• Team-oriented and self-motivated
• Valid Driver’s license
