About the role
Assists mechanic employees with loading supplies, stocking shelves, picking up parts and equipment from vendors, janitorial duties, and building and grounds maintenance for the auto shop.
Responsibilities
- Solicit quotations from vendors by telephone and written documentation for purchases of supplies, services, and/or rental of equipment repairs.
- Answer inquiries about stock and help resolve discrepancies in orders shipped and/or returned.
- Complete all required work in SWIP/EMS and HMMS for auto shop assignments.
- Complete timesheets for all employees assigned to the auto shop on a daily basis.
- Assist shop foreman and mechanics in procuring correct repair parts for vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Requisition and issue parts, supplies, and equipment; perform quality checks on new items.
- Deliver and retrieve parts and vehicles to vendors.
- Assist shop foreman with accountable disposal of waste products (e.g., waste oil, antifreeze, used oil filters) and ensure compliance with environmental policies and procedures, including coordination with the waste disposal contractor.
- Maintain the employees’ “Right to Know” station, including MSDS book and all pertinent safety manuals for the Charleston Auto Shop; label all products received per MSDS indexing system.
- Serve as unit procurement cardholder and liaison for purchasing supplies and monitoring user transactions.
- Assist other supply clerks throughout the district with job-related issues.
- Operate a two-way radio to dispatch wrecker services to employees with equipment repair problems.
- Assist the Shop Supervisor with researching information pertaining to equipment replacement on contracts.
- Develop training outlines for all mechanics in the shop and maintain tracking systems and rosters for all training.
- Assist with emergency and inclement weather operations (e.g., hurricanes, snow and ice) with essential availability.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A high school diploma and six (6) months of directly related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalent.
- A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
Physical requirements
- Ability to sit or stand at a desk for extended periods and work on a computer.
- Work in office, warehouse, and outdoor environments in all weather conditions.
- Capable of lifting up to 30 lbs.
- May be required to work outside normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and departmental-related emergencies.
