Supervisory General Engineer.
About the Role
This is a supervisory position within the Construction, Engineering, & Infrastructure Career Field (Career Program 18-Engineers).
Responsibilities
- Supervise contracting officers representatives (COR).
- Responsible for budgeting and staffing needs.
- Responsible for strategic planning within the organization.
- Manage work orders.
- Evaluate maintenance, repair, and minor construction project requests to determine proper statutory work classifications.
- Review technical project scopes to determine correct work classifications (e.g., maintenance vs. repair vs. construction).
- Evaluate engineering plans to identify design deficiencies, structural issues, or local site constraints.
- Authorize design modifications, identify structural or utility constraints, and evaluate projects.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
- This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG).
- A one-year probationary period to assess supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
- Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must meet the education and experience requirements described below.
- Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
Qualifications
To qualify, you must meet the following education and experience requirements:
Basic Requirement for Supervisory General Engineer:
- Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher) in engineering. The program must:
- Lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); OR
- Include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics:
- Statics, dynamics;
- Strength of materials (stress-strain relationships);
- Fluid mechanics, hydraulics;
- Thermodynamics;
- Electrical fields and circuits;
- Nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties);
- Any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
- Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished:
- A thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and
- A good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
- Professional registration or licensure – Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
- Written Test – Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination, or any other written test required for professional registration, by an engineering licensure board.
- Specified academic courses – Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences, including the courses specified above.
- Related curriculum – Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology), provided the applicant has at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
Specialized Experience:
One year of specialized experience which includes:
- Evaluating maintenance, repair, and minor construction project requests to determine proper statutory work classifications.
- Reviewing technical project scopes to determine correct work classifications (e.g., maintenance vs. repair vs. construction).
- Evaluating engineering plans to identify design deficiencies, structural issues, or local site constraints.
- Experience authorizing design modifications, identifying structural or utility constraints, and evaluating projects.
Foreign Education:
If using education completed in foreign colleges or universities, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to a U.S. education program. Full credit must be given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
